I messed up..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
180g is not small for your 7" aro, fish doesnt grown over night, you can have the aro until you out grown him and find him a new home. people doesnt keep fish for life, most of the hobbist buy and sell fish 1-3years average.

Its true bigger tank better for fish and make them happy, but every one situation is different, some doesnt have money to get bigger tank, some doesnt have the space to upgrade. Get what you can.

Just my 2cent.

If people tell you, you need a 500g for your arowana and 180g is to small what you going to do? You dont have the space for 500g or you dont have the money?
if you don't have the space or money to house a monster fish, you don't get the fish. period.

So you saying the OP shouldnt never get the fish for his 7" aro? your saying other 80% people in this forum not to get fish just because they cant upgrade in the future? I have seen way many monster tank 500g to 1000g over stock. That mean they shouldnt never have monster fish ?

Oh im not saying it doesn't happen, people shove monster fish into tiny tanks and swear they'll upgrade for months. I think, if you cannot house the fish or move it extremely easily which is the OP's case because big aro's don't sell or adopt easy, then don't get the fish. We as hobbyists are here to provide as good a home as can be in a glass or plastic box of water in our homes, and keeping a giant fish you know can't fit in your tank within 6 months isn't a good look for our hobby. I could throw a virtual rock on craigs list around here and hit 10-15 ad's for aros, RTC's, TSNxRTC hybrids and any number of giant fish that people thought were so cool and now can't fit in their 55's, 125's etc etc etc. The whole mentality of "eh get the fish and sell or give it up when it gets to big" is the new version of "fish grow to the same size as their tanks!". That thinking needs curbed out of the hobby, but hey that's just my lowly opinion.

I'd LOVE to keep a red tail catfish, they are so amazing. but I don't have a spare lake for him to grow to his potential so I don't own one.

EDIT: I HATE SUPER OVERSTOCKED MONSTER TANKS. Terrible look, and I don't care how pristine your water is those fish aren't living to a full potential crammed shoulder to shoulder.

This is the responsible way of thinking, and I like to think this way as well. I get what sticky is saying, but as pointed out, big fish don't sell easy if at all, they usually end up free. It's easier to rehome when young which is why it would be advised to do so now.

I totally agreed with you 100% and not everyone think the same. You can't stop people or advice them what not to get because they WANT it. What we can do is give them a good advice or suggestion how to care the fish.

It's true that big monster tank is always best for the fish, I 100% agreed with that but that is only 1 main reason. There are other reason is people CANT have monster tank or DONT have the space for monster tank. Then why buy the fiish? people will buy what they wanted . People always say they will upgrade tank later but never do.

What I'm trying to say is that if anyone want silver aro for their 180g we shouldnt stop that member from buying it or tell them no the tank is to small for the aor, it going to out grown the tank, you will need bigger tank?

Look around this forum closely, see how many people have small tank for monster fish. Fish doesnt grown over night.

IMO I never tell people not to get fish because they 180g or 300g is to small for the fish. If a member buy a red tail catfish for his 180g members going to tell him it will out grown the tank and it will need to upgrade soon. Well let said if he upgrade to 500g and the red tail cat eat 3feets long for sample, you going to tell him to upgrade to 1000g plus? If anyone want to own silver aro, red tail cat, or any other monster fish that can grown up to 2-3ft plus they should get a pond or pool for it?

PS...im not arguing with you bro. I just simply want to point out my low level opinion that what I think and its my 2cent. We talking or debating about fish or keeping fish it never end, people have their own opinion, thought, 2cent and it own experienced.

I will absolutely tell someone they need a bigger tank for an RTC and if they can't get a pond for it to not buy it lol. that's half the problem with all these abandoned monster fish, people swear they'll upgrade and people say ya you have X amount of years before it'll outgrow the tank! no worries! then a year later theres yet another sad ad on a forum or craigslist about a catfish too big for the tank and no body can take it.

naw not arguing, debating ;) haha

While you can't stop people from making bad choices, you absolutely can advise them against it.

I would love to have a tank with a few silver aros, but its not going to happen for me because I don't foresee the reality of my wife agreeing on letting me set up an Intex swimming pool in our basement

I for one want an arapaima, and I know this is not going to happen unless I build an actual pool (not pond, pool -.-).
Would I get one before I am certain to house it for life? Absolutely not, because the chances of finding someone devoted to a fish 3 meters long in Belgium are slim to none.

Would I get an aro in a 180? I have, because I already knew what I could do with it once it would outgrow my tank (and by that I mean a couple months before it was getting to the point of outgrowing it, it was sold at 40cm, my tank is 70 cm large, plenty of time still...)

I wanted a Channa Micropeltes, before ordering it, I contacted my local zoos, asking if they would take him. When the response turned negative , I changed my mind, because there was literally no chance of finding a home for a 70 cm Micro, -even for free-.

If bad comes to worse, an aro will find a home for free, I'm pretty certain of that. In Belgium anyway.

I do join you guys on the grounds of the reflexion, you should basically not buy a fish you can't care for, but I think that if you can ensure his life will be good elsewhere if not with you, you kind of cared for it right?
