I have been keeping aquarium fish since 91 and every time I have attempted to keep an arowana they have all died prematurely.I only like the Jardini's and over the years there have been five attempts with the six incher that I just lost being number five, this morning everything was fine I fed him raw shrimp chunks as nomal and then I went on some erands, well when I got back I went to do an afternoon feeding and I didnt see him in the tank at all so I searched the floor hoping that he recently jumped out and could be saved. The fish was nowhere on the floor so I looked at the two inch space between the back of the tank and the wall the tank sits up against and dammit if the fish wasnt wedged back there.the tank has a basic hood/light combo with a small hole in the back for gas exchange, the filters take up all the other space but somehow he managed to aim and jump through the small opening.I have no clue what could have spooked him,he lived with a smaller peaceful redtail barracuda and a small indo dat,far from rabble rousers. My apology for the chapter and verse but I have nowhere else to vent.To add to the misery my wife goes on and on about how gas could've been bought with that money.

Well this is one of the #1 causes of death in Arowanas. All I can say is try putting some window screen over the open holes. this is what I do to keep them in, and it still lets oxygen through. Because the reason that they keep jumping is not so much because its been frightened (but that can also cause it to jump) but its most likely that it thinks food is up at the surface such as a bug or something of that sort. See in the wild they are always jumping for insects and with this constant act it has evolved a very keen eye sight that even lets them see at night. I hoped this helped and good luck.:D

A friend of mine has had the same problem with Jars, he's moved on to asians now, which you can't of course.
Why don't you get a acyrilic sheet to put on top of the tank it self and make breath holes in it which are too small for the fish to get through.

This isn't a "problem" with the fish... its a problem with the fish keeper. It has nothing to do with a curse or anything.

Every single thing you read tells you to cover every inch of your aquarium, and yet over and over again you see posts on these forums about fish that "got through a crack that there is no way i thought it would fit"

I wrote "my friend has had the same problem." meaning it's "his" problem
If I'd have wrote "my friends jar's have had the same problem." you would be correct.
I also think the OP's use of the word cursed needs to be clarified before you censor him or her. He or she could feel cursed for not filling the 2in hole and not for the fish jumping through it.
That is of course if you wish to be pedantic.
A better idea may be to offer advice to others because you are obviously more knowledgeable!

Bummer. Thats how my first silver died, it jumped out from a very small hole in the back of my tank. Was the other aros that you kept died from jumping out of the tank?

Once was enough to teach me a lesson. Don't give them any temptations, no matter how small the opening may be. Chin up and better luck next time.

sorry to hear mate. best of luck next time.
