Since my fire eel committed suicide I need to find another centerpiece fish. I'm looking for something that gets in the 8-14" range and is non schooling. I have a lot of ideas but I wanted to see what the community suggests. The tank is 125g, tons of filtration and will be housed with peaceful fish.. Rainbowfish, Clown Loaches, smaller catfish, etc. I've kept predators for years so I'm not looking to go that route with this tank.

Ideally it would be a non aggressive fish. I do have live plants so preferably something that would leave them alone.

Senegal bichir, knifefish, gourami...I'm a big fan of gouramis, especially the gold, but they max at about 6"...an African knife gets to about 12"...or you could always go the cichlid route

i was thinking oscar but probably to aggressive.

I've had knifefish and bichirs in the past. The fish I was thinking about are actually gouramis.. Either a couple snakeskin or maybe a giant.

may I suggest a modest school of silver dollars? Once full grown, they're combined mass moving in unison makes for a dramatic display.

I've had silverdollars and they destroyed every plant in my tank.

Gouramis would be a good choice, they're really cool. A giant one would outgrow your tank, though.

I was thinking a giant more than likely would outgrow the 125. Ultimately I'll probably finish my upgrades with a 180g. The clown's will need that eventually.. Is a 180 still to small for the giant?

The LFS about an hour away usually has the snakeskins in stock, this made me think of those. Is the 8" or 10" a more accurate adult size?

Woo!!! Gouramis are awesome! I've had blue, gold, and pink kissing. They're all beautiful and interesting to watch. Very colorful, active, and graceful. Snakeskins are next on my list! Just be careful if you're going to get more than as sometimes they can be nippy, but in a 125 with lots of other tank mates and hiding places I doubt you'd have a problem.
