I need a centerpiece fish..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was thinking a giant more than likely would outgrow the 125. Ultimately I'll probably finish my upgrades with a 180g. The clown's will need that eventually.. Is a 180 still to small for the giant?

The LFS about an hour away usually has the snakeskins in stock, this made me think of those. Is the 8" or 10" a more accurate adult size?

I think probably, yes. Big gouramis get BIG. Not sure the max size or if it'd be able to turn around comfortably in a standard 180. It'd be fine if your 180 happens to be wide, but then again, it's a tall fish too, so I dunno. I'd say probably not for life.

Also, a giant would definitely eat the smaller inhabitants of your tank. They can be peaceful up to a point where they reputedly (sometimes) become very aggressive. But the smaller fish will easily fit in its mouth.

Giants are big-bodied and grow to 2+ feet long so I'd say no way on a giant! Get a snakeskin!

Well if it helps the details are:

125g w/ FX5 and CU-500UV canisters

10x Australian Rainbowfish (2-3.5")
10x Clown Loaches (all under 3")
3x Rubber Lip Plecos (under 4")
2x Dwarf Gourami (2")
1x Hoplo Catfish (5.5")
1x Syno Hybrid (2")

I have 4 pieces of driftwood and PVC pipe for hiding spots. Plants are duckweed, frogbit, Lily Pads and some other plant :)

I'm not sure how dwarf gouramis mix with regulars...might want to research that a bit. I personally don't like the dwarfs, but you still have plenty of options!

I have one powder blue dwarf and one of the regular red / blue striped dwarfs. They get along fine.

If I do a snakeskin I will get two of them. Supposedly they only get aggressive if competing for a female.. since I'll only have two there should not be any reason for aggression.

Sounds awesome! Pictures whenever you get your new inhabitant! :)
