So I'm getting a new tank it may or may not be anywhere between 20-40 gallons (not sure if that even matters).

I may not be getting a starter tank (with a filter and heater and what not) and I have realized that some filters at like $200 and others are like $30-50. So whats the difference? and what brands should i look at/stay away from

thanks

What kind stock are u keeping..??
Depends on the type of finish..
Regular canisters work pretty well for 20-40 Gals..
Ehiem works jus fine.. Or the FX series

I'm changing up my mind and am considering this:

some Giant Danios, Tiger Barbs (I think like 3 or 4 each b/c they school, you think that would work?) and then a Red-tail Shark (or Rainbow Shark, will weighing that out)

PS it would not be a 20 gallon, it would be a 35 mby 40 gallon tank

I would skip the red-tail shark/rainbow shark if you don't plan on upgrading to a large aquarium; it will need a larger aquarium at its full size.

As for filtration, check out the SunSun canister filters. They're pretty cheap (all of them are under $100) yet work very well for how much you pay for them; they all have built in UV sterilizers and come with the media, too.

I've used aquaclear for years with my 55 gallon and smaller tanks. They are very easy to use and clean and work well. With my 72 gallon, 75 gallon, and 210, I have sumps as they move much more water.

I've had great luck with the Emperor 400 on my smaller tanks, and have used it in conjunction with canister filters on larger tanks. They're cheap and easy to maintain, and I've never had a problem with mine.

you don't really need to look to much into canister filters with a tank that size... anything 100 and up and I, personally, would recommend using one then

I use aqua clear. They are a great filter however if I were you I would look into this filter: AquaTop CF-300 Canister Filter

From what I have read they seem to be a great filter for around the $60 range. If you can splurge and spend $90 I would go with the CF-400 version. I plan on buying the CF-400 in the next couple of weeks.

Just get an AC70 or AC 110 if you can deal with looking at a filter hanging off of your tank. It'll be MORE than enough filtration, and will last for years.

If not, get an Eheim 2213 or 2215. Again, they'll last for a very long time, and are great for the money. The plus is that they can be put under your stand so that you don't have stuff hanging off the back of your tank. But for your size of tank, you really don't HAVE to get a canister filter.....Especially with the stock you want to keep.
