Heavy mechanical filtration? I have always thought of a skimmer as the primary means of mechanical filtration...

What other options do I have?

Well - yellow rays can take that kind of water temperature in the Wild or possible in larger aquariums. But for most home aquaria - I would still suggest keeping the water temps below 82F - if for no other reason then for better disfused Oygen levels.

Agreed, I'd keep 'em low 80s to mid 70s.

Canister/cartridge filter will add to your ability to pull debris out of the water column.

Or just put a fine filter sock on your sump inlet...get a couple...and wash a dirty one once a week. Just sub um in and out.

I stack nylon mesh 400, 200, and 100 micron. Nylon mesh plug faster because they are a single layer but are very easy to clean. Stacking them keeps them from pluging so fast. Sometimes I use a 75 or 50 micro to polish the water, but they plug very fast.
