I can tell you that the panasonic lumix is a great bridge (super zoom) camera. The pictures are far superior to a point an shoot as you will notice if you switch from a regular P&S but then you will also notice a huge upgrade in picture quality going to a proper DSLR.
You can even get attachments that allow for macro and extra zoom, filters, etc. They are more or less a cheap DSLR without the super expensive lenses that need to be bought and carried.
I highly recommend the Lumix super zoom.

If price is no limit and you are going on what sounds like a trip of a lifetime, invest in a camera that rewards you when you are there with images of the utmost quality. Canon Rebel or Nikon D3100 with kit lens. Will blow away most all of the pint and shoots outthere IMO.

I had the fz27 I think and it was a really good camera.
If you want a DSLR look in to cannon and nikon. Or if you wan't a point and shoot look in to kodak(they used to make realy good point and shoots but idk if they do now), cannon, nikon, panasonic, sony, theres one more but i can't think of it atm.
