After almost a year of Silica sand, I'm done with it. It looks nice when its maintained, but it takes a lot of work. The grain size is very small and its blown around very easily. This also means that detritus is covered when the sand is blown over it making pockets of hydrogen sulfide a real possibility. I gravel vac once a week, and every 3-4 days I have to push the sand back in place because the flow from my canister outflows create bare spots. I also believe after reading this article -(http://www.oscarfish.com/article-home/water/82-diatoms.html) that the silica sand is a constant source for diatom algae... which I dispise.
So I am looking for a sand, or something small grained. I was on the caribsea website earlier and they've got some nice stuff, but a lot of it isn't carried any more or its discontinued. It also doesn't state composition so I don't know if its silica based or not. I remember reading about 3m colorquartz... anyon ever tried this?

I need some feedback. Gimme pics, your experiences, grain size, composition, the works... :lthumb:

I went with Peace River from Caribesea. I know you were on that site, but did you see it on there?

Grain size is 1.00 mm to 2.00 mm.

Got pics? I did look at that kind. But when I try to "buy it online" both of the websites they list as carriers (petstore.com and marinedepot.com) list it as discontinued. Know where I can get some?

pool filter sand is the cheapest and best imo

The PFS here is silica based... something I am trying to avoid. But I can order it... but if I have to order online, I might as well look at some of the other substrates out there as well...

I either called the company and they gave me a list of stores that carry their products or they had a list somewhere on their site, I don't remember which. I do remember special ordering it from my LFS as they carry CaribeSea products but didn't have that one in stock.

I'll try to get a pic up tonight.

Sweet. My LFS carries the Caribsea sands as well. Maybe I'll see if I can get them to order some in as well.
