I Need All That Dissolved Oxygen!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
depending on the depth of the pond and the airstone, it would probably work. I use a tetra luft pump on my koi pond at 4' depth, (without an airstone) and it pushes a lot of air. A blower is way overkill for 2 tanks, not to mention the noise.

Depends on where you set your standards. I am using a blower for ONE pond. I KNOW someday I will expand. When I do I'll be glad I opted to buy something I can use after the upgrade rather than something that will just get tossed aside in the future.

I looked at pumps and then happened across a blower that was $40 more. Easy decision.

Maybe someone needs to explain this "overkill" concept to me....... I have found NOTHING on MFK regarding "overkill"......:headbang2

I just noticed you mentioned a Tetra pump. Just now I found another site in this country that has this pump, and its by Tetra Germany: http://www.tetra.de/tetra/go/7B505F...?seite=6&group_id=646&group_2_id=13&lang_id=2

It says its for 250-600 liters with an airflow of 400 l/h, with two air outlets. I'm assuming this should cover me. :) Is this similar to the one you are talking about? Going to spend some more time a bit later to see which air stones to get...

Trust me, from what I've seen, I know, which is why I mentioned it. :D
I know where you're coming from on the blower, especially if it is just a little more expensive. I haven't come across anything like that available locally though, and we won't be expanding on these ponds. I really appreciate the input though!

I'd love to order from Marine Depot but I've already discussed with them the fact that they can't ship to my country. After I asked them about which customs regulations could prevent it since other EU nations are on the list they can ship to, when they told me that was the reason, they said they'd ask a manager and I haven't heard back. :(

Anyways, I've got one last question before this thread sinks to the bottom. Does the size of the airstone matter at all? I'm trying to figure out which ones to pick with the Tetra pump I mentioned earlier. There are ones made from lime-wood that are 45x15x15mm, ceramic block ones that measure 25x25x25mm, 1 meter or 125mm flexi ones, a 250mm long, flat one with a plastic case (looks kinda cheap to me), and even some kind of ball made of a quartz-sand mixture that is 40mm. :nilly:

Actually, the ball interests me because the weight keeps it at the bottom on its own (great 'cause there won't be substrate at the bottom of the ponds), it mentions its particularily suited for garden ponds, and its by JBL, which I understand is a good brand. Cheap too. :D

What does everyone think? Thanks for the help on this, those who have pitched in, its helping to wrap up the finer details on our setup so I can get ready to start putting this all together. :)

Go with the ball one. You can run more of them. The wooden ones have finer bubbles but clog easily. BTW, is this project for Tiger shrimp? Sounds like an interesting project. I hope you post more about it as it comes along. I had a friend that tried something similar with blue crab and lobsters.
