If you have a sponge in the water, it's probably not a good idea. It may keep the climate humid, but it collects bacteria that can kill the crabs. Instead of the sponge, try a regular misting. Dry sponges are fine, and i found that my female enjoys playing with it very much. Make sure you get the crabs from someone who knows what they're talking about, like a petstore or Things Adrift on Long Beach Island. Boardwalk dealers often give incorrect information and the crabs may therefor be sick from improper care.
My crab also doesn't eat, nor drink, yet somehow, she is alive and well. She doesn't move much unless I move her, in which case she just goes back to her original spot.
As for food, i try to give her table scraps. Her favorite is cooked, unflavored pasta. Give that a try. Past crabs liked corn and chicken. Hermies are scavengers and will eat ALMOST anything you give them, provided they are healthy and hungry.
And the difference between purples and strawberries is simple. Strawberries are completely red and slightly larger, while purples have purple or blue pinching claws but often lose this with age. Purples are the ones you usually see on the boardwalks.
Hope i could help. PM me if anything comes up or if you have any questions for me.
