I need help with Oscar

You rock DF, I'd love that recipe you wrote about. I have an adequate cannister filter but also added a HOB filter to make carbon changes easier. I honestly only change the water about once a month so that's probably a major part of my problem right there. I'll try the peas also. Thanks again man, great tips indeed.

Yeah, i would say the once a month water change is part of the problem :D

Ingredients: Just buy what you can, but not too much of each. Once it's all blended together, it will make A LOT of food. So dont get large quantities of each.
The amount of each doesnt matter a whole lot, just use your best judgement.

*beefheart
* chicken livers
*shelled green peas
*1 small packet of frozen spinach
* prawns (I like to peel and head them otherwise they pass the shells and they end up sitting on the bottom of your tank)
*1 cup of fish food pellets crushed (soak this in some warm water to soften, they blends smoother if soft)
*1 packet of unflavored knox gelatine to bind

Method:

.....Its really quite simple, everything except the gelatine needs to be either minced or put in the food processors and made into a mince-like consistency. I recommend that you do each of the meaty ingredient in the food processor seperately and then combine all in a large mixing bowl. Its okay to blend all the veggies together. Once everything is blended up, combine it all in a bowl. Add the crushed fish food. Disolve the gelatine in a little water(as little as possible) then also add. Mix thoroughly.

Then you can just place a medium amount in a few plastic baggies. Flatten them and pile on top of each other in the freezer.
Freeze. Once frozen break portions up and store in a container in the freezer.

You can add or not add whatever you like but avoid corn; it is indigestable to fish and causes problems.

Any other ideas on this recipe would be good.

I also add a vitamin supplement as well. ;)

Outstanding, I did not know that about the Wardley's. I will change it immediately. Thanks so much for the help, as you can tell I'm still learning.

BTW, there used to be 5 Tiger Barbs. ;)

Get Omega One. Drive a few hundred miles for it, or order on line. It's worth it.

Yeah,
One other thing that you could do is discontinue use of the carbon.

Actually, you dont really even need it. The purpose of carbon is to elliminate any smell from the water and to keep the water clear.

There are some theories out there that carbon is a contributing factor in the cause of HITH. There is however, no hard evidence of this. But for me, i like to keep it safe. I dont use any and havent the entire life of my tank.
Instead, i substitue the carbon with filter floss. Filter floss helps clarify the water by removing fine particles, but it doens mask smell.

Which brings me to another point. IF a tank does smell, there is something wrong. A properly established and maintained fish tank actually wont smell bad at all believe it or not.

Basically the only other use for carbon which is the only reason i keep some in the drawer is that it removes medications from the water. So if you use a medication and treat a sickness, then want it out of the water, carbon will remove it.

I believe improper nutrition is to blame for HITH, after studying the threads here. Make sure you use a great staple, like Cichlid Gold, or especially Omega One. Also offer a variety, including worms, river shrimp, different kinds of pellets, (I stock four kinds), krill, and veggies, mine eats peas(thanks to Rally). Variety and nutrition is the key IMO.

You guys are awesome! A lot of great tips. I embarrassedly think that my problems stem from irregularity of water changes and monotony of cheap food. I'm seriously embarrassed. I think I'll do a 75% water change tomorrow and regulate my buddy’s food better. I feel bad for him.

I guess once a week is what is needed where as I've been loosely doing it once a month. I work three 12s a week in the local ER plus two 24s in the FD so I'm afraid I've been neglectful. That makes me feel bad because this guy has a ton of personality. He'll take the softened krill right out of my hand but if I'm a couple of hours late to feed he'll start jumping and butting his "nose" against the glass of the lid.

Thanks for all the help ya'll.

I replace the carbon with chips of lava rock for a little extra biofiltration

Doing a little research on the Omega One brand food. Looks like the stuff to use. I'm thinking about rotating the Cichlid pellets, kelp pellets, shrimp pellets and Rally's concoction. We're do you all buy online at?
