Hi everyone, Long story short.....I set up a 100 gallon in my office 1-1/2month ago and all was going very well. (Put some Chiclids in there) Well now I've got the Algea Bloom (I think)going on. Did my water changes, these fish have not been big eaters from day 1 so I don't feed them much.... changed the carbon and did a partial water chnage on Friday as water was beginning to get clowdy and when I cam into work today the water is green..........can't see the fish. Tested the water with the test strips and water is hard and high in Alkalinity, however nitrites are between stress and harmfull level. What should I try now. I hate to put chemicals in there. Can anyone help? (I know I left it unattended for the week-end....and that is bad but I have no choice as I work far from home)

HELP PLEASE!!!

it kinda sounds like the tank is not cycled due to the high nitrites i would remove the carbon all together and perform water changes on the tank how many fish are occupying the tank and what is your filtration and such and how long is the light left on

I like how you spell "clowdy". I can't help you here, but I'm keen to know the solution to this. I had this problem previously. I ended up doing a 100% water change.

Hi There, presently there are 3 x 1" and 3 x 2" in there. Now I hope I answer this properly, I have a Rena 3 for a filter, the light is set from 7:30am to 6pm. What else do you need to know. Do I have to do a 25% change and then wait a whole week for another??? I am really unhappy with my self, feel like I have done something wrong. I set up a 150 gallon at home and used the same pratice....everything was fine in my 150. I feel really stupid right now. :irked:

Suggestions anyone????

For now I'd set the lights on a shorter time cycle (less daylight), and I'd do a 25% on a daily basis for a few days. You'll get through the bloom, but I'd be worried about the water quality for the sake of the fish.

you can add salt to keep the nitrites from harming the fish and keep up the water changes untill everything is better

is your tank in direct sunlight? this might be causing the algae bloom. cloudy water? your tank is probably still cycling or its a bacterial bloom. try keeping the lights off and up the filtration, should work.

Hi Oscar!

No its not in direct sun, it gets little sun in 1 corner of it in the late afternoon. I have done another water change, and will do so everyday I guess until it gets better, and keep the lights off. I guess it was not fully cycled!! My fault completely, I guess. I was wondering, I've read that Chiclids like their water around 80 and that is where I have kept it, is it too warm? They have never been big eaters since day 1. They don't even come up for food after a week-end of no feeding??? This breed is new to me and I am wondering what I am doing wrong. I did a lot of research but still am wondering if I am doing this right. I usually keep community fish and never have any of these problems....my 150 at home is doing so well, and always has. Any info you can help me with would be greatly appreciate.

Thanks again.
