I need help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd drop the temp (SLOWLY, depending on the stock) to 75 deg F, 33% to 50% water changes daily or as much as you can stand to do, and bring in some filter media from the home tank.

A good UV sterilizer will help.

An hour or two if daily direct sun in the corner can do more than you may think, reduce the lighting. 8am - 3pm would be my guess.

Can you get us a pic?

You've got two problems. The algae bloom which is the secondary problem and the uncycled tank which need immediate attention. Salt (1 tablespoon per 5 gallons) will help detox the nitrites. Also prime can be used. You should be changing as much water as you can though. Any signs of ammonia?

What kind of filter do you have at home? Can you take any media from the home filter and swap it with the one at work? Likely your tank will finish cycling on it's own over the next few weeks, but you may loose the fish. Also keep feedings to a minimum.

Once your tank has cycled you can deal with the algae bloom. Reduce the light, there is no need for the light to be on during the weekends when your not there. If after the tank cycles and the algae still exists then you may have to "blackout" the tank for 4 to 5 days, never had to do this myself though so you may want to seek a little more advise on that if needed.

Good luck,

Ok, guys.........I am losing hope. Here is what I have done. Sept. 8th - 1/3 WC, Sept. 9 - 1/2 WC + added some "cycle"(as per guy at LFS) and ceramic to filter, from an older tank, Sept. 10 - 1/3 WC. Sept. 11 nothing, Sept. 12 - 1/3 WC, Sept. 13 1/3 WC, TODAY NOT A THING. Oldly enough my fish are more active and lively than they have since I've had them. Here are my water stats, Nitrate 20, Nitrite 0, Hardness 300 - VERY High, Chlorine 0, Alkalinity 300 - VERY high, PH 8.4. I have brought the temp down to 76 slowly. The lights are only on from 8 to 1 in the day and my shades are down in my office window, have been all week. I am wanting to do a 100% WC but have nowhere to put my fish. Suggestions.........HELP PLEASE. Sorry I can't post any pics, husband is gone on a Moose hunting trip and took the camera..... Please help me out.

the water is a cloudy green. Like a green lemonade. It is hard to see the fish if they aren't in the front half of the tank. I just don't understand.....there has to be an answer.

If there are no plants in the tank,I would leave the lights off until the bloom goes away.Block all sunlight into it. A UV filter will also help.

Hi Dwilder,

Thanks fr that. I was thinking I have algae bloom but after reading that I am pretty sure it is "Green water". till not sure what my best option...... I have had tanks for over 20 years, even a 150 @ home and I'va never had this problem...... Have you ever had this? What would you do?

never had green water unless i was making it on purpose work on getting water in check ammonia fish waste etc try the light blackout and large water changes until your water is okay then everything should come around
