Ok, so I'm about to purchase 5 or 6 red belly Piranah and I have a few questions. Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I couldn't decide where to post it so I just put it in the General category. Any ways, here goes nothin.

Would a 29 gallon tank be large enough for 5 or 6 Piranah? They are only 1" now but I want to make sure I won't have to buy a new tank a few years down the line, because I'm not sure how big they can get.

What should I feed them? When they get bigger I'm going to introduce them to live prey, but until then what should I give them? I'm thinking about giving them my own formula of fish, shrimp, some vitamins, and gelatin then freezing it into cubes but will they be too small to be able to eat it?

How fast do they grow? When should I start giving them live prey?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Why don't you know how big they get? I don't understand this?

Anyway most likely your talking about red belly piranha and they will out grow a 29 for sure. Your going to have 1 left in 18 months if you don't kill them some other way like water quality issues. They are very messy feeders and in a 29 gallon tank your going to constantly have to do water changes to keep the water clean.

Basically it's not possible for the long run. Minimum would be a 55 for just two IMO

Edit: Just noticed it is RBP's your talking about..............

Putting 6 rbps into a 29 gal tank will last you 2 months MAX...I bought my p's 3 months ago the size of a quarter and they are now 5" a piece. After this initial growth spurt they grow pretty slow (1" a year)
If you can get your p's off live do it...goldfish have little to no nutritional value making your own food would be ok but CAN be messy. I use cichlid pellets.
You will need excellent filtration I usually go for double the tank recommendation.

I wouldn't even bother getting them until you physically have a larger tank for them ready to go

I am no expert on the RBP field but i have done allot of reading on the subject and a 29 gal would not last very long. You would need something allot bigger to start with (propably 120gal) and allot of filtration 2 x FX 5 or a very good sump.

A 29 will be fine, since you'll probably get rid of them within a couple months when you realize that they just sit there motionless most of the time.

well personaly i WOULD NOT get rbp ive owned them and there not to great ( but still ok )

save some cash and wait for a "gold piranha" aka mac

they stay smaller and they are more agressive and put on quite the show

29g is way to small for a shoal of piranhas, regardless which kind.
it may last you a good amount of time if you go with a solo serra. specie.
sanchezi would do, or a mac (it gets bigger than sanchezi)
if you really want a shoal of fish and want to see them shred things into pieces then go with a shoal of exodons.

RBP's can get up to a foot long. 75g is minimum for 4, although 125g is really recommended minimum. You can't keep ONE RBP in a 29g.
