4 weeks ago I set up a 500 gallon tank. I swapped my cichlids from my 125 to the new tank.I used the sand and rock decor from the old tank plus new stuff. The first 3 weeks were fine. Water was clear and all was well.I came home this week to find my water cloudy and I am losing 1 fish per day.I have NEVER had any problems with my smaller tank so I am not sure how to fix this problem. I have to be honest.I have never needed to test water chemistry before,so I don't have the testing equipment.I intend to get the water tested today. If anyone has any thoughts/ideas I would appreciate the input.

The new sand you added may be what is causing the cloudiness. It could also be a bloom in BB as you stirred up the old substrate.
As far as loosing fish, maybe a cycling issue but it maybe a water quality issue in general. Massive water changes daily, 50-75%.

Thank you for the responses.I had the water tested.They said my Ph is fine,nitrate is ok. Water temp is too low and have low BB. Truth is I never ran a heater on my 125 so I didn't think I needed one on this one either. Now that I think about it the 125 always ran at 77/78 I guess because of the 4 filters I had on it. Now I only have 2 large pumps for water return. I have upped the heater setting to 80,added salt and better filter pads. Now I'll give it a few days and see how it goes.
Tank has cleared.No deaths for last 4 days.I think things are under control. New question..A friend gave my a large power head that he has no use for. I am planning to mount it it in the tank just for increased current flow. Thought is; put a length of pvc on intake with several holes drilled in lower half and a dual arm diverter to spread the out flow.Holes in lower half only since the over flows skim off the surface. Figurs this would increase the flow from top to bottom. Thoughts/opinions?
Still no more casualties.Water is still clear.Jewel cichlids have laid eggs for 2nd time.I think I'm on track again.
Always nice when things get back to normal please post a pic and what dimension for the tank?

And I don't know how your tank is setup with overflows but power head can help money the water and most important towards the filter or sump filter through the over flow. I like using them allot in my tanks but with my new tank it has allot of jets from the overflows so I think I will get the coverage I want just using the main pump.
