I Need Help!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Once you go mac, you never go back ;-)

It's threads like this that make me really glad we have a Mac.

+1 - wont ever catch me complaining about the price of a Mac. This is the 3rd computer in the family that's had some sort of malady in the past 6 months. I'll be a certified tech before the first of the year at this rate! Haha

MacAfee is like swiss cheese when it comes to viruses. Even microsoft's free one is better than it. AdAware and Malwarebytes are both free and are great at clearing out ad junk like that. You want to run them in conjunction with a virus program, because not all virus programs are designed to grab adware too.
This is what I would have said, good post.

If we plug in the external hard drive to run the backup, will the adware infect the HD? I'm not sure how that stuff works.... I hadn't thought of that though...it's so painfully obvious! Lol. We'll save this as a last resort.

It depends on how smart it is. I've had one in the past that kept hiding itself. I would find the file then right click to uninstall it and it would disappear and go hide somewhere else. I did this 4 times. Even went through other programs to find it and as soon as I found it it would move itself. Search couldn't even find it. Lol it was a stubborn li'l bugger. I don't keep anything on my internal HD. Only the operating system and a game or two so I just wiped it. And reinstalled from an OEM disc.

Hey, I'm a computer geek in real life and some of those things can be a real pain to get rid of... I'd definitely recommend trying Malwarebytes to remove the one you're having problems with - you can usually do a trial for 30 days or so free. Even better is to run a few anti-virus programs to try and catch more stuff. I like running MSE, Malwarebytes and one like Avast myself.

She told me that she called her internet's tech people to see if they would help her and she couldn't get malwarebytes to download. I'm not sure how they figured it out, but apparently it's gone......for now.....I'll write down all the suggestions for future reference though. Its come back once, I don't think it's gone just yet...

Thanks so much guys! :)
