CHICAGOLAND
Ok well My 240 filled with alot of large SA Cichlids, looks fine, maybe a little on the cloudy side but my nitrates are too high (40ppm). I do 1 50% waterchange a week/or 2 25% water changes all depending on how the tank looks/water params are. I have a Pro clear Aquatics Wet/Dry 300, with a Ge-nex 1200 with head pressure is probably doing more like 900 gph. I would like to add more filtration but i dont know how. The Acrylic 240 has two corner overflows chambers built in. And the two openings on the top are situated in a way where i cannot add any type of power filter/canister. I will not do any sort of drilling on this tank. so any suggestions are needed ALOT!!!
Here are some pics for a visual.

setup a drip system

Do a keyword search and it should direct you to threads on this topic in the dyi forum. What is your baseline nitrates from your water source?
You could add a couple UGF systems for more biofiltration and add fast growing plants to help prevent formation of nitrates.
The only other thing I can think of is gravel vaccing. Nitrates are not removed by filtration systems (except specialised anaerobic add ons) so they do slowly increase.

40ppm is practially no nitrates my tap water is 30ppm and i run around 40-80ppm all the time.
i learned a trick the other week about adding an external bucket filter in the main filtration line coming in to the main filter sort of a pre filter that can be loaded full of media.
its what i will eventualy do when i need it.

when i say water changes i also mean gravel vac i do it 1-2 times a week
Great, you never know,lol.
I agree with Dixon that 40ppm is not bad. around here it is currently running 20ppm out of the tap. Even the guys selling nitrate reducers think 40ppm or below is ok. http://www.aquatichouse.com/test kits.asp

I thought it was low too, but i see my cichlids starting to get like the little holes that are the begining of hith
