I second the UGF idea. I know many will say that they're outdated and no longer useful in an aquarium, but in my heavily stocked tanks (i.e. a family of 3" goodeids - appx 10ish fish in a 20G long), I run UGF's and they keep my params well within boundaries. I never see nitrates above 30-35 ppm. Ammonia and Nitrites are at 0, or close enough not to be testable. This is with 50% weekly water changes, a Millenium 3000 using biological, chemical (chemi-pure) and mechanical filtration and the mentioned UGF, as well as a couple big bunches of java moss.

The only downside to this is that you cannot use live rooted plants on a UGF filter, or you will either kill your plants or clog your UGF.

hey guys try this filter at awesome i was a big fan of rena until now

I have not used them but Petairs fluidized bed sand filters look sweet.

Do you still like this filter? Any problems with it? Is it easy to use?

I've got a 240 gallon like yours except my wet/dry is about a foot shorter than yours. I've been running the tank for 3 years and no fish has died from water parameters. I feed my fish pellets once every other day. I do a water change once a month or every 3 weeks, it depends if i have the time. I fill the tank up straight from the tap, i use amquel, novaqual for water conditioning, and add salt during water changes.

This is what I had in my tank for 3 years:
4 Silver Aro's
1 Black aro
1 RTG
1 Tiger Shovelnose cat
1 RT Giant Gourami
3 Red Blood Parrots
1 Green severum
1 Gold severum
2 Convicts

Recently I just took out the all the substrate from my tank and now it's bare bottom. its a lot easier to clean. it takes me about 30 minutes vs 3 hours with the vac going through the substrate. there is less poop on the ground now because I'm running 2 aquaclear 70 powerheads with foam cartridges attached to the bottom. I also got rid of some fishes because it was getting too wild in their with all the aros jumping and splashing and my gourami went on a rampage and killed a lot of my other fishes at the end of 3 years of having my 240. This is what I have now:

(tank veterans)
1 black aro
1 rtg
1 regular green severum
1 regular gold severum
1 blood parrot

(new acquisitions)
1 red shoulder severum
1 red severum
1 juruense cat
1 blood parrot
2 uaru a.
1 flagtail or fei feng

My water still seems the same. Nitrite = 0, pH = 6.0 (my tap is at 7.5. I add tap water in slowly so my temp and pH slowly adjust and then I add the conditioners.), Ammonia = 8 (yea it's way high, but hey it's been like that for 4 years and i've no fish die from water parameters. I need to do a nitrate test one of these days but so far so good.
