I need some help concerning Home Depot vinyl and PVC!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fish brothers (and sisters), though by brother, I implied sisters too..

I'm going to Home Depot tomorrow to bu some vinyl tubing and PVC pipe to build a water change system. Tell me what safe vinyl and PVC should I be looking for, I.e. is the white PVC pipe safe? I see it all the time in sump set-ups on this site, so inform me please. And the vinyl, is the clear one at Home Depot ok?

Can someone who knows for sure give me some knowledge on this?

Thanks, I appreciate it. :)

yup you got, and as for glue-ing the pvc, you might have to wait a few hours before exposing it to fish and run it through some water.

I buy schedule 40 white PVC all the time for spray bars and whatnot. I also try and buy the braided reinforced vinyl tubing when I can. I never smell it. Probably just left over smell from manufacturing process. Also don't forget the regular clear PVC cement.

Regular schedule 40 (preferred) and schedule 80 is fine. Vinyl tubing be it webbed or not should also always be safe.

As far as glue, dont skip on the primer, just clear glue could likely leak; not saying it will, just more likely. Cantex makes a cheap and proven glue and purple primer set that is available at any hardware store; any other glue and primer rated for drinking water use would work as well.

An old thread I put together when building some plumbing for my FX5 for reference:
