I can't recommend the fluval 405 enough as a main filter. It worked wonders on a 65g tank with a relatively heavy stocking. it struggled a bit with the fine particles but a 4+ internal sorted that.

Return it. No problem. Do as said above. Petsmart gets an automatic no questions asked return policy from everyone they buy from. 10-20% !! So it is no big deal for them. That is why I NEVER buy opened packages of anything.
