I need YOUR help coming up with a solution with reference to my monster goldfish!

No problem. Why did you cut back the gill plate?

It was peeling back and not healing properly after being bitten during a feeding. The gill cover, not plate. My bad. I followed the same plan RD just linked.

Where did you hear it's bad for their gills? Here in our forums?

I have seen no negative issues with any species of fish. I have not used it on goldfish, but I can't see goldies being any different with regards to gill structure etc.

I've read anecdotal stuff that says its bad for gills in the long run?

I don't know.

I'm thinking of going ahead with out sedation and using a pair of something like these, rounded facial hair snips. That way I cant do any damage by poking or him moving?
