I NEVER have Nitrates... question

I didn't realize that, but it makes sense. Nice to know. What's up with the 3 bottle tests some people have?
 
How long have you had the tank running? When I seed new tanks with old filter media I have zero nitrates for months afterwards. I have a 10 gallon that I seeded last february, and the nitrates rarely reach 5ppm. I had a bunch of little fish in it, and now it just has a pair of Betta channoides. Some of my older tanks have 10-20 ppm nitrates and I water change them every two weeks or so.

IMO Low nitrates are a pest, because I always get cyanobacteria from the tap water in tanks with 0 nitrates.
