As the title says. I ordered some Indian almond leaves of Amazon. They must be alright because the supplier got 4.5 stars from over 2000 people. It's fot my shrimp tank. I don't need the tannins just the bennifits of the leaf for my shrimpn fry to eat. I generally don't add things to my tank with out treating them in some way. Should I boil the leaf first? Or just toss it in?

I've used HUNDREDS of IAL, all ordered from Amazon, during my betta breeding years. I always gave them a rinse off first but that was it. Rinse and add to tank. Never had a problem.

Iirc it’ll sink faster if you boil it but boiling it will release the tannins so it’s something to think about it you don’t want the water brown.

IA leaves are great, especially if you have trees near you. But to order them, you are going to pay for what should really be free.

What trees are there where you live? I am sure that many types of leave, if not having quite so much tannin, are still really good for fish, or shrimp.

Thanks all. I'm just out side edmonton alberta. We have poplar and trembling aspen. It's fall here right now so best time of year to collect leaves.

I use maple, oak and grape leaves, which I collect myself. Gotta pick them up after they die, dry up and fall off on their own. Shrimp descend upon them like locusts and seem unoffended that the leaves were picked up for free.

Treatment consists of a quick rinse just before use. The leaves last far longer if they are not boiled/x-rayed/microwaved/ozonized/UV-sterilized or otherwise abused before use. I have yet to discover any virulent fish pathogens living in the trees on my property.

I use Magnolia grandiflora from my yard. No prep, no rinse, straight to tanks. Have been using them for years.
Where are you located?
Check out the distribution of Magnolia spp. and almost certainly you have some nearby.
In the past I have used almond, oak, and maple, the least preferred is maple because they soften too quickly.
Boiling them will only accomplish that the ‘good’ they can give to the tank, will be given to the cooking pot instead.
Reminder- the effect of the leaves on lowering pH will be minimal to not existing. Thus, they are added for other reasons, not to try to lower pH.
