You can also use clay balls. I think you can buy those at walmart. Using dirt without drainage holes is a recipe for disaster. Even if you only add a little water at a time, it still pools at the bottom and will inevitably rot the roots.

I did a Dieffenbachia (a.k.a. Dumb Cane) hydroponically, and it was quite beautiful. I just used pea gravel as the media in a small mason jar. I think it's way nicer looking than potting soil.

i think i will unplant it tommorrow.. not only will this eventually hurt the plant..but i forgot that it will also hurt the bowl.. and i just found out the bowl is a good one... so back to the drawing board.. i think i will leave it decorated with nice shells .. and your right potting soil just doesn't look good.. thanks .. you really know your plants.. i hope you took pics..

This might be a little boring, but I think that bowl would be an awesome and funny fish food container. Just pour in what you have in the stand and then find some sort of cork with a handle to plug up its mouth.

I have one similar that I filled up with sharks teeth. I also thought about planting it or something but then I wouldn't know what to do with the 1000's of teeth I have collected over the years.

Hmm I wonder if lucky bamboo would grow sideways like that, just need water. Or one of those resurrection ferns. Cute pickup!
