Could just be unhealthy stock. Especially if you bought them from Petsmart, Petco, or Petland.

do they look small or mal nourished? alot of times they have parasites. i had one when i bought my first tank.

They were bought at Walmart and looked small, but they have grown quickly, they are plump and have definately gotten bigger. I have treated them for parasites in a hospital tank before they were moved over because one looked like it had ick

Could quite likely be internal damage from the Ich parasite, unfortunately they aren't just on the outside and I lost a couple of nice German Rams a few weeks after they had Ich, did some research and found at that the trophonts (?) quite often cause damage to gills and even stomachs of fish that will later die for no apparent reason.

I was trying to get my kids interested in my fish hobby about 2 months ago. I went out and bought 2 gsp from a specialty fish store. We got them home they seemed to be doing fine then all the sudden they stopped eating and died. Our water levels were fine. My daughter was crushed and doesnt seem to want anymore puffers. Our symptoms included: not eating and when they breathed sometimes my daughter noticed a small red worm like string hanging from their gills. We contacted the store and they said that they had been treated and that they treated all their tanks weekly to minimize diseases so how do you know if they have had ick or not? Oh and we were told to feed them feeder fish by the staff there.

Well sadly, walmart is not known for having the best healthiest fish...to say the least. It's a risk when you get one from there. I used to think maybe it was just my area that had bad fish at walmarts, but after reading tons of other threads about how angry ppl are with the conditions walmart keeps their fish, I realized it's not just here. I, personally, have not bought any fish from there, but my puffers originally came from there. The girl who gave me the puffers, started out with 4 and ended up with 1. And then the second puffer I have is pretty much the same story as the first one. So i have 2 now. But it was a risk I took bc I knew they came from walmart originally.
