Where the Sun is Warm
Well I'm now fighting off heron #5. My koi are fairly safe because of their size but I'm worried about my slow moving fancy goldfish. The heron is landing on my cascading waterfall and walking down to the main pond. It's been raining here so my usual deterrent isn't out there to scare away the darn sneaky bird. Heron #3 and #4 met an untimely end due to the deterrent.

I've tried decoys but these herons are getting bigger and bigger each time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Shoot it. Stuff it. Set it up by the pond. Heron prob won't stop if they see compition. Lol. Jk. What is ur usual deturant??

Congrats on Heron #3 and #4, wish you the best of luck on heron #5. I was lucky enough to only have problems with black birds.

Best I could suggest would be a roof, however they may not work for all ponds

blueberry net, small enogh that you cant see unless your up close and the cant get through it. buddy of mine had the same problem with blue heron and then we found out that they were protected.

Ideally the pond should be 3 plus feet deep. The bird won't be able to walk in it to hunt for the fishes. If you have a hiding cave it will allow the fishes to shelter themselves when the birds come by. The other option would be putting a net over the pond. Good Luck.

The pond is an average of 3' deep and in some places 4' but the goldfish being goldfish like to come up to investigate things so they become easy prey.

My usual deterrent is an Akita (the little white dog in my avatar), I think he was a bird dog in a former life. Yeah, they are protected almost every where these days. Heron #5 is much bigger than my heron decoy so I don't think he's intimidated by it.

So I guess I'll be netting the pond. Thanks for the support and suggestions.

But seriously. Invest in a weak pellet gun. After a couple shots the birds usually learn... Good luck!
