I spawned my Ghost knife!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
damn just couldn't leave it alone!
so i ended up putting few in an egg tumbler away from particles from the tank (quiet area), very very gentle vibration (eggs vibrating) all good but it's tumbling in a cichlid tank so ph problem...
well lets see how it goes.

That is awesome! Beautiful ghosts by the way.

How do you sex them? Is it the larger mouth with the male? or something else?

let me know and keep us posted!

:headbang2

That's amazing. Makes my little bgk feel pathetic lol how do you tell the sex and how fast do they grow? I want mine huge but it's only grown an inch in the past 3 months :(

all eggs gone. it seems high temps done work :( (it's very hot in sydney)
next batch coming soon. getting bigger tanks next week :)
mines around 3-4years old.. It took me about 2 years before I could noticce some differences. From my observations, it's easy to tell their sex if you have a look around their neck. if it's has a pot belly, then female.

I also thought that egg tumblers were for mouth brooders...

If the eggs are sticky, then they don't need to be tumbled, right?

good on you. i saw a shop in sydney have a spawn once before too. eggs got wasted. stuck all over the logs..
you should be pulling the eggs away from that tank and keep the water clean.
your bacterial bloom is going to happen from muck from spawn and dead eggs that are either non viable or have not been fertilized or have fungus. good eggs will be slightly translucent.
it is posssible that the eggs never were fertilized successfully. you have next year same bat time/channel.
egg tumblers can be used for sticky eggs but what they do is take the sticky coat away with tanic acid then they can act like dispersed eggs. i would just remove them next time and stick in a tank with the same water but keep it clean as and maybe even steal some filter material from the tank too. otherwise be prepared to remove the fish! milt and dead eggs dont sit around next to eggs in the wild and fungus "seems" to be able to spread to good eggs but i dont think this is what is happening, i think the good eggs are being fungused by them being in less than ideal water too.
you will get it next year.

thanks ausaro.

i agree. i added extra internal filter and also have a small 1footer tank (used to have cherry shrimps) which i am thinking of just moving some of the eggs next time.

eggs do start off very translucent with some having some blackish thingy in the middle. It stayed like this colour for few days then it will start turning white and later it crumbles and turns to dust like and it covers the tank.

extra filter is definitely working. water almost clear.
if extra filter doesn't do good job,, then i'll add a canster next week.

Anyway Happy New Years

Mark from Oz.
