The way I understand your stand and your sump/filter, the front openings are just too small to be of any use. You could access through the back but you would need to keep it from the wall a good 2-3 feet so you can get down in there to do any work you need to do.

What if you built another cabinet with some nice big doors that matches the style of your stand and put it right next to it to house your sump? You could top it with formica and have a nice little work station too. If you wanna get crazy, you could plumb your own little sink in it for water changes, etc.

Just a thought.

Now there is an idea. It will help make cleaning the back of the tank easy too since you can jump on top of it to get back there.

hey Matt, why not scrap the idea of using the acrylic tank for a filter and build a plywood tank lined with pond liner. You can also use an old water bed matress, or vinyl swimming pool liner. It will be super cheap and you won't have size constraints to worry about. You can build as big as the stand will allow. Home Depot has pond liner for $12 per linear foot (12 ft wide) and Skycraft has it for $8 per foot. Skycraft also has thiner sheets of acrylic that will be great for a drip tray. I'll post a pic of my new spray bars. They will sit on top of the scrubbies and don't need to be leveled like a drip tray.

btw, Use the acrylic to make another sweet tank to hold feeders.

mhmmmm 40gallon full of feeders :) I' actully thought of that, but how would i be able to drill the hole into the plywood?

with the same hole saw that you use on the acrylic. Then use an Xacto or razor knife to cut the hole in the liner.

Do, i need a bulkhead fitting?

And do i use the glue and the cement on the wood or can i just nail/screw it.

mhmm here are the measurements

Door - 32" long 12" tall

inside the stand - 3 ft long by 4 ft wide, the other side is the same cuz the stand is 6x4

any one know how i make a plywood sump?

You can fit a 90 gallon tank on each side of your stand and still have five inches of clearance on the top to work with. The sump being 3x4x1 (just under to allow for for getting it through the back). Being that big, I would drop two rectangular laundry baskets in there to hold your scrubbies then lay a spray bar on top of each.

If you decide on two tanks connected with pipe, use standard bulkheads with gaskets (not electrical conduit fittings). It will be easier to use hose to connect them but if you use pipe, count on using a union between them.

Also, if something you are going to build has any vibration, has to last, or holds something heavy, never use nails, only screws. And always glue for maximum strength.

:)... my dad said we can either do his filter setup or we can do mine, but if we do mine I have to do it bymyself. I wana build 2 90gallon plywood tanks and i'll screw them together i'll cut them and glue them, but if i cut a finger off so be it! it will be worth it in the end lol :).

Doing this by myself would be good experience.

So, 2x 3 by 4 by 1 plywood tanks, with screws and glue. What size bulkhead should i use?
