i've had a male and female pair of yellow mara elongatus since they were an inch long and i can tell you that this is no elongatus! from what i can tell, it has the fins and color of a juvenile male msobo and the face of a lab, so that's what i think it is... after a second glance i can reassure you that it is a msobo x labidochromis hybrid!

he'll still be a stunner when he grows up, so dont lose hope!

I sure hope so. My challenge isn't so much what it looks like as much as I don't want hybrids and that's why I specifically asked the dealer if it was a hybrid and was told no.

He also said it is still getting it's stripes, and so I will wait until it gets larger and see if the coloration changes.

My challenge is that I've arranged my tank with so much stone work that the only way I can catch it and take it out of the tank to is totally tear my tank apart--so for now, I'm stuck with it. (BTW--I can't get my fish to stop breeding in the caves!)

Thanks for the encouraging words. I think it would help me deal with a hybrid if at least it was a good looking fish. Right now it looks like a dirty yellow lab. :irked:

Hey--good news. It is changing color and I finally got the full name. It's a Pseudotropheus elongatus usisya “Mara Rocks”. So I did get what they said I got. Cool fish!

It appears to be a yellow lab hybrid, crossed with what is anyone's guess. Most certainly not any species of P. elongatus, as previously mentioned the body shape is completely wrong for elongatus.

You were indeed mislead.

you got bamboozald.. yellow lab, doesnt look like a mix to me
