So I spend quite a bit of time at pet stores (one in peticular). I love the reptiles area. I was looking around and asked if I could handle the crested gecko. I fell in love!I went around the store for an hour and a half checking prices and making a supply list. I compared the pricing to the price of a mangrove monitor:
Crested: $110 for lizard, $320 for supplies
Mangrove: $430 for lizard, $270 for supplies
The mangrove supplies includes a harness and leash for outside purposes (stupid edmonton laws) whereas the crested supplies includes a front opening 30 gallon tall vivarium.
I'd be using a fogger to keep the humidity up and using a digital wall thermometer for temps. I have vine/log/plant selections down, bedding, 2 clamp lamps per lizard, 3 bulbs per lizard (one night, 1 uvb,1 day time), water conditioner, liquid calcium and d3 supplement/water conditioners, pre-made crested gecko food (he's only 2 months old) paired with mashed fruits and veggies/meats (home-made baby food :P).
I've looked into everything on cresteds and mangroves....my only question.....which should I get first?(I'll definitely have both, it's just a matter of who first :P)

you won't need heat lamps for cresteds, unless you live in a very, very cold place. they like the same tempuratures as us, so unless you need a heat lamp, then they don't either;)

If you've already gotten all your information on both lizards, you should know that mangrove monitors get about five feet long, and that they are arboreal, so you'll need an enormous cage in which to keep it. And you should also know that the continuing cost of keeping a mangrove monitor will greatly surpass that of keeping a crested gecko, because the monitor will need to eat so much more.

I don't know what your financial and living situations are like, or how much lizard experience you have, so in the interest of the lizard's well-being, I would recommend the crested gecko. But in the end, I suppose it's up to you.

Crested gecko sounds a lot... Leashes are for dogs, not monitors... no heat lamp will be needed for the crested as mentioned... foggers are cool, but a spray water bottle will work just as well... the upkeep of a mangrove will be gigantic in comparison to a crested.

Heh.... comparing a crested to a mangrove monitor is like comparing a mouse and a dog. Most things have already been mentioned already, and also, I would shop around a bit, the cresteds here are usually only 50$. WIth that said, I think you should go for the crested.

It's an eyelash crested (captive bred) juvenile. I know the whole leash and size thing etc, but they have actually reptile (large= monitor (says so on package) harnesses and leashes for walking purposes.
I have enough room and money for either, I'm just thinking of which would suit me better for the time being. I may be getting the crested first (well....tomorrow) so I'll keep you guys updated.

try kingsnake.com in the classifieds section they have some awesome crested gecko morphs for good prices 110 is kind of high for a normal crested, personally i would definately go with the crested gecko first but theyre both awesome :D

no problem im sure you will find a lot of cool looking crested geckos from reputable breeders too the only downside is the shipping. good luck and as soon as you find what you like please post pictures ;)
