I think my api ammonia test is lying to me.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you leave out the sample overnight, the tube will turn yellow with no ammonia and super light green if there was ammonia. It isn’t accurate to any ppm or specific number since it isn’t made to sit overnight. It’s a nice little way to get a “finger in the wind” if you’re on the fence trying to read that lowest .25 reading on API.

Gonna try that today.

Anyhoo, I just ended up ordering more vials, as it will probably be more cost effective over time as DI water is going for around $20 a gallon and for some reason I can't find it in town. New vials are less than $10 for 8 so.... I figure I'll just replace the vials every 6 months or whenever needed.

Hello; Distilled water (DW) and DI (deionized water) are had by different means but my take has been they can be used pretty much as they are the same. I shared lab space when I taught at a small college with a chemistry professor. I was looking for some DW and he showed me the apparatus he used to make DI. I do not now recall how he explained the difference. (( maybe reverse osmosis?)

Anyway cleaning the vials with DW ought to work and that DW is about a 1$ a gallon around me.

We will see as my new vials should be here today.
With a little more care than rinsing them out with warm tap hopefully they will last a little longer.

Still gonna keep looking for DI water though.

So I tested this morning and came home to yellow test vial. Good stuff!
