I think my Oscar is a moron

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is just my personal experience. I used to keep 2 juvinile O's in a 55 gallon tank before I knew any better. They were just fine until they hit the 6 inch mark and then became aggressive towards each other. I bought a second 55 gallon setup to house the other O and moved one to the other tank. (It's really hard to find good used large tanks in Nebraska) I finally found a 125 gallon tank in Lincoln for $150 so I bought that and set it up downstairs and joined the 2 O's once again and they had their little tiffs for about a week and are now best of buds.
I suggest getting a larger tank (75 gallon at least) for the O if you are going to keep the other cichlids that are in the tank with him. If you are going to get rid of the other 2 cichlids then the 55 will do. You probably will have to do 2 50% waterchanges a week though to keep the nitrates in check.
In my opinion Oscars are not aggressive they are just very territorial.
Good luck with your O, I hope he comes out of his slump.
Turn the lights off on the tank and let him be for a while, he should come out of it.
*** Make sure to check your water params that could have something to do with the way he is acting right now!! ***

Check this site oscarfish.com out they are real good people to talk to about proper Oscar care... You are killing him slowly that's why he isn'y doing anything. Mine is 5" to 6" and he swims around all the time also with one Oscar in a 55g you should be doing at least 80% wc a week if not twice a week please post your tank readings.. I have mine in a 55g and my nitrates reaches 10pp in 3 days (no tank mates) so what do you think yours is after a week?? Good luck

Welcome to MFK. And no not everyone here acts like Chago09. I can name alot of people here who list there tanks that are way overcrowded or are to small for the fish. Some of them with 2000+ post. Nobody calling them a moron. Yes you do need to upgrade filtration for your tank as someone said earlier spend more time at it or if it is not in a room with a lot of traffic then place it where there is. As long as your water parameter are
all stable then you are fine.
If you truly are not happy with the O the give him to someone who will be.
