Hi guys ive had my florida spotted for approx six months now,in which time he has grown from 6" to 8.75" which going by what people say ,is not alot of growth.

This is what happens at feeding time.

I put the bloodworm in the water and he comes after it,but once hes bitten it and it sinks or moves it takes him 10 minutes to find it again!

Or if hes any where in the tank and i put the food in other than right in front of him,he smells it and he will look in every part of the tank EXCEPT where the food is!

He used to eat crickets(for about a week)now if i put one near him to get him interested he swims off like its the scariest thing in the world?

Today i bought a few feeder fish which i didnt want to do really but i thought it may awaken the predator in him,but apart from the first five mins when i put them in and he had one in his mouth, which i was quite happy about, until it got away and swam off!

He just seems too slow,he will try and creep up on them but as soon as he gets within six inches of them they just swim off and it seems to take him five minutes to realize this, whats wrong with him?????

cheers steve

Don't worry about it. It'll eventually catch the feeders.

i had a 18" one and he would devour the fish i didnt kno any better at the time but like every week or two i would toss him 2 dozen goldfish and he would have em gone in 4 days. but also as soon as they hit the water hed eat like 10 of them too idk once again the single fish personality never seems to amaze me

lol, my two inch gar tried dried bloodworms when i wasnt even feeding them to him
so now i do, tho i normally feed him minnows

he now begs for food (well.... he has been for a while)

gars are rather peaceful and slow moving. they are predators but they dont chase their prey. they either stalk it or wait for it to come to them.

thanks for the replies guys

Cheers steve

24 hrs later and the feeders were gone so i think i must be wrong about the little fellow, its just that hes only grew 2.5" since december, which i gather is pretty slow?

cheers steve

I think my gar is a bit of a wimp to be honest, hes useless at finding food as i said earlier in the post,i expected him to grow pretty quickly but he sure aint doing that?

Try floating pellets (anything rich and shrimp based)... mines eat floating pellets (due to laziness i think), i know another guy^s gar no longer takes any live food (eats floating pellets exclusively .... super lazy fish AND live peacefully with all kinds of fishes ... cautions, i think that is unusual)

i find my gars prefers to take food which floats ... if you can try frog (that also tends to stay on the surface).

Prawn (remove head and shell) tend to be welcomed too
