i have a 75 gallon with 2 severums in it what kind of bichir should i get? What will be able to stay in the tank for a long time.

In a 75, I think an Ornate would have no problem, if you can find one. Just BEWARE PLECOS. That is how I lost my Ornate. Slimy coat is just too too tasty.

An ornate will need a bigger tank than a 75g, and don't think "the tank is 18" wide so he'll have ages until he gets to 18" and cant turn around". Believe me, you want them in a bigger tank before then. I noticed a big change in the behaviors of my 16"+ ornate when moved from an 80g (48x20x20") to a 160g (60x28x24"), much less stressed, doesn't get panicky and skittish, doesn't swim crazily against the glass, generally more laid back and happy. Plus they'll grow bigger faster in a larger tank. The biggest ornates I've seen have spent their lives in a 3000L (~8x4x3') tank right from the word go, and they're huge, probably all three are close to 20" in less than a couple of years.

Well from experience the Senegals grow quickly and are the most inexpensive. (cheap is to see if you end up liking them)

I have had mine for a month or two shy of 3 years and have to say it is the most entertaining fish I have ever had. Even though they say on here they have poor eye sight, I can swear the thing stand on its front fins and looks at whoever is in the room.

The Senegal would do very well in the 75 with out a doubt.

I myself just got an Ornate a few days ago. My first change to another type of bichir. The little guy is only about 4-5" and already showing personality as the other.

Now here is the problem...

I bought mine out of excitement not knowing this was one of the larger bichirs. This thing is gonna grow to over 20 inches! None of my tanks or your 75 I believe will house this kind of fish with out causin stress and ultimetly health issues. It simply needs more room.

Are you willing to buy a biger tank in a year two?

you could also try out a delhezi

in this phrase, "try" means "grow" so it should say, "you could also grow out a delhezi";)
