Even the smallest amount of sand can damage the mag drive pumps used by most filter systems. Your tank looks great the way it is. The only thing more abrasive than sand is....WET sand.

i like the look of gravel over sand... ive seen a few black sand tanks i have liked but almost all of my tanks are bare bottom....

i like the look of sand over gravel and all my tanks have sand. so i vote sand

I just went out today and bought a 50 lb. bag of pool filter sand so I could change my tanks. I guess I'm tired of the brown rocks and want to see what this sand thing is all about. I'm also going to paint the back glass. It is embarassing to show off my tanks and have water stains down the back.

I think everything looks just fine as is but here is my take.

I don't like generic gravel because all the multi-colored rocks can take away from the fish/plants/driftwood/background. I find it makes the tank a little busy looking.

That being said, I really do like black gravel. I just set up a new 75 and the black gravel really accentuates the plants and fish colors in there.

For me its either black grav or sand.

Barebottom. Here you go,
