I'm thinking of getting a herp, but I'm not fully sure on what I want. I'm stuck between a lizard and a terrapin. So can anyone give me some sugestions on what I should get and tell me why.

how big of a pet are you looking for? what size enclosure do you have? by terrapin do you mean an aquatic species of turtle or land?

good beginner lizards i think are leopard geckos, pictus geckos, fat tailed geckos, and bearded dragons. i also think mali uromastyx are good although require more heat.

aquatic turtles require a lot of maintenance because of the water. needs to be clean, filtered, and heated. possible turtles are red ear sliders, painted turtles, musk/ mud turtles.

a good land turtle would be a box turtle of some kind. three toed box turtles are most common.

tortise wise, russians, marginated, hermans, and greeks all stay a fairly small and easily maintained size

I was thinking of a mali uro, but I thought they were hard but if all they need is more heat than average lizard, thats not problem, I live in Arizona it gets over 120 F (and thats on a cold day) so heat is no problem. :naughty:

A terrapin is a bi-terrestrial reptile, so yes its a turtle that can walk on land and swim in water. A red eared slider for example.

Something around 24", and don't worry about a cage I have a buddy who can build a cage of any size and any design. So mabye a berdie or a mali uro. How big does a mali uro get?

Is handling a major factor? Or just something easy?
I don't know what you mean by handling, but I do have a fair amount of reptile experince. My neighbor use to be gone almost all day so I would go to his house and care for his green Iguana every day, for about 5 months.

P.S. the iguana was three feet long.

No snake wasn't one of the choices, I'm not afraid of them I'm just afraid it will eat my ferret when it gets big. but if it was a snake... Ball python it would be.

I'd get a Terrapin though.
A diamond back terrapin, captive breed.

They're awesome turtles, don't get too big and aren't shy at all.

crested or leopard geckos are easy and handleable

Actually.
Since you do live in Arizona.
I'd make a large outdoor pond and get a bunch of turtles.
Sliders, Cooters, Painteds.

You have the warm weather to do so. Just provide a partially shaded area so nothing gets too hot.
