Hey guys/gals I have cycled a 55 for 3 mos now i want a red devil is there anything I should know are they touchy? I know they are glass bangers, but what else, is 55 big enough? decor? mates? should he be in the tall or the long? I have two 55's that are available for him. Thx in advance!!

When they get big, No plants, They dig almost as much as a geophagus. My large male could actually push big rocks like a bulldozer. These Fish seem to be natural Landscapers.

Mates could be opposite sexed Devils (if the tank is big) or other robust fish who can take care of themselves in a tussle. Alone is probably best if your going for no scaring or torn fins. Id go for the long tank myself, as they like to dig, But I dont think it matters.

they dont seem to be touchy or sensitive at all. Super Hardy, and as you already know, theyre Awesome.

Post pics when you get started.

Don't be fooled as juvies they do O.K. with tankmates, then one day they will, and i do mean WILL snap on the Majority of fish in the hobby, some exceptions may be dovii, umbee, some jag strains, their might be a few others that can withstand Red Devil attacks but the list isn't long

RD's are meeeeeeeean and have very powerful jaws. They also can get 14"+. Great fish though.

I wouldnt put one in anything smaller then a 75G for life but I dont think a 55g would be cruel and a RD wouldnt really need a bigger tank for at least a year or two anyway.

BTW, how have you cycled your tank? With live fish?

Here's an example of the power of a RD's bite...

Well damn, this site wont allow links to other sites. :screwy:

Anyway, over on water wolves.com in the photo forum there's a thread by carman850 about his 14" Trimac that got killed by a RD. To quote him...

"He must have locked jaw with RD again, his jaw structure was completely destroyed. His mouth was wide open and so could no long breath efficiently. The other day he lost conscious, realized that he was goner so I took him out. His lower jaw was completely broken by the Red Devil, it was broken on the joints on both side, and in the middle! Their jaw structure is so fragile compared to formidable Red Devil's."

I just got two of them today for my 120. Both are about 3". Are they slow or fast growers?

If their anything like Midas, they grow very fast if you keep up on the water changes. My Midas is growing at about an inch a month and I think RD's might grow a little faster then Midas.

Unless you bought an Amphilophus citrinellus or Amphilophus labiatus from an accredited breeder, midas/rd is the same thing, just a common hybrid of the two (but still a spectacular fish and one of my favorites). I use the two common names interchangeably.

I think it is great that you posted this thread so you can get lots of info before you actually make your purchase..you will know the negatives and positives.. and if he will be in a 55gal forgot about any other tank mates.. too close in proximity with another fish for an RD.. :)
