i want a wels cat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Actually, Wels reach 3' in a year and a half, not 3 years...

Maybe you are right but I think this is more of the growth rate in a warm in-home tank, where the fish does not have a half a year no-growth period.

I see. Thanks. So, finish (or correct) this sequence of your numbers, please, for my understanding sake:

warm tank, heavy feeding -------------- 3' in 1 year
warm tank, normal feeding --------------3' in 1.5 years
outside pond in PA, normal feeding ----- 3' in what time?

There are too many variables to chart it out like this.

I already answered your question. You clearly are forgetting that even outside, the catfish will grow mostly, and fastest, during the summer, anyway, even being outside, so it all evens out after month 12.

Someone remember what wendsday's growth rate was?

The same as I keep saying here - In fact, his probably grew a bit faster than that, even.

He is due for an update - Wednesday ? You seeing this? Let's see yours!

Mine grew from 7" to 36" from 2012 to present day... i would wager 12" a year growth in "typical" aquarium circumstances. If put in a 1k gallon or larger area from the start i would say 3' in a year is very plausible. Once put on an autodrip system and given room to stretch out my specimen grew from 18"-36" in around 1 years time. My cat has also been housed alone since ive had it.

Fwprawn- u still have ur guy from the 2012 batch? Lei's specimen from our batch was always around the same size as mine through the years...none were anywhere near 3' in the first year.

Unfortunately no - but I am raising two more. I don't know why - but both of my big ones suddenly died, for no reason, once they hit the 28-32 inch mark. Wes (and others) have said that they've seen this happen, and nobody knows why.

I am happy that yours is still around. My current ones (pics elsewhere on here) - are about 12 and 17 inches respectively - and are not housed together. I'm keeping them in unheated tanks, and feed only every few days. I wonder if the sudden death syndrome is caused by not being under "natural" conditions per se; so this is kind of an experiment to see how they do. So far, I can tell you they are much more active, and constantly on the move - in cold water - whereas the original two were in heated tanks and were the laziest fish ever. I wonder if somehow something builds up in their bodies, which eventually kills them, by not having a cool down period, or being in cold water? Just a theory, but not one I want to test again :)
Got a new photo of yours?

Check out the catfish media section.... all i can say is our findings are on opposite sides of the spectrum lol, very interesting tho...my glanis has always been up off the ground active and consistently kept at 76-78 degrees. My 650 is unheated but stays at 76-78 year round. Overfeeding any cat can cause issues. I keep a sporadic feeding regimen of anything pellet, prepared...to live foods every day to once a week. I think live food is beneficial for iodine but i dont feed it very often so sudden death of any sort in ur case is surprising to hear as i dont do anything special. All i can say is mine blew up once placed on an autdrip system so clean water and heavy oxyogen is rule of thumb. The cool down theory idk... lei still has/had his until this summers sale of it, kept with an rtc so id take a fair guess and say his was heated yr round like mine. Odd to hear ur findings but interesting. Glad to hear ur new specimens r doing well

That is indeed very interesting - I remember when we were raising ours at the same time - and we did note that mine was lazy, while yours was active - now it's reversed, in the sense that mine are in cold water, and much more active. I'm very curious about the long-term success we'll hopefully be having.
