I want an Arowana so bad now!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when i 1st started this hobby. i didnt know a thing about aros, but that was the 1st fish that ive liked, so i just went to a lfs one day and randomly bought one just because. threw it into a 10g with fresh new water and everything. upgraded to a bigger tank in 3 months thinking the aro would outgrow the 10g pretty soon. just depends on how motivated a person is on keeping the fish. if doesnt care... that aro will be stuck in the 125 until the day it dies... or the owner would really save money and be serious about getting a bigger tank.

180g should be sufficient for a jar. The 180g typically is 72x24x24. Hell...some people here have a 180g that is the same dimension and have a silver aro/black aro that has outgrown that tank but have yet failed to upgrade themselves. :screwy:

Also, if you do get the 180g, you'd better make sure your bedroom floor will support the weight of a full 180g. Most bedrooms are on the 2nd floor unless you have a ranch house or sleep in the garage. But if the room in question is on the 2nd floor you may very well need to install supporting beams/joist under the spot where the tank will be placed. Another thing to consider, whether its possible/feasible and most importantly what room is below your bedroom.

Good luck. :D

The living room is below the room... Haha.

Its more of a loft with a 3 foot hallway... I think it could support it as my house used to be a buisiness and they had a couple people with desks upstairs that had computers and other office supplies on them.

I'm building my own stand with DIY plans here on MFK. I'm going to build it in my woodshop with the help of my shop teacher. Im sure it should be well built as my shop teacher builds/repairs longboats and tallships.

Although, when I DO move from this house, Im going to get one of those fiberglass tanks for the basement or if I have a LARGE downstairs bedroom it will go in there. If my next house has a basement that has concrete floors, Im getting the biggest one they make!

I'm going to look on craigslist for a while though and if I find anything bigger then a 180, I'll buy it and Just have to find a place downstairs.

But if I get a 180, I t will go in my room. I dont know why people say 180's are bad for Jardini's at that seems to be what most everyone keeps them in.

I would NEVER but a silver of black in a 180 unless I had already bought a larger tank and had it in my posession.

One of these days I'll get a fiberglass tank and keep some big silver or blacks, but for now Im going to get the 180 and a jar. I think getting the Jar first would help me get a good start in Aro keeping.

Also, Your avatar... Is AWESOME! Did you just take pics of your aro gorwing up and make them a slideshow and turn the speed up really fast or just take a pic of it as a baby then adult? Either way, I want an avatar like that!

I have another question...

I thought Black aro's got just as big as silvers, somewtimes bigger? But I hear of people keeping them in 180's for life?

If this is possible, I would consider it. Yeah Blacks are pricey, but theyre exspensive because theyre awesome!

There are people who keep arowanas in 75 gallon tanks for life, that don't make it right. If you keep asking the same question in different ways eventually someone will give you the answer ya want to hear. No you cannot keep a silver or black in a 180 (6' x 2' x 2') for life. you could keep one in the 180 for about 3 years. But then will need to eventually upgrade.

Things to consider.
Will your house support a 2000 pound fish tank?
Are you willing to do 75 - 90 gallon weekly water changes?
In 3 years will you be in a sitsuation to provide a larger tank?
Arowanas live for up to 20 years, will you care for this fish thru high school and what about college?

I am not trying to deter you from getting an aro, just giving ya some things to consider. Be smart make the right choice and do what will be best for you and the arowana.

I do 90% water changes on My three other tanks (listed in my sig)

Im pretty sure it could hold it.
Three years is a long time, plenty of time to save up for a larger tank.
I was going to get bichir for a 125, they live 20-25 years aswell.

I know it doesnt make it right if other people do it. But even people on MFK I have seen keep aros in 180's for life. I know not all people on MFK are responsible fishkeepers.

I'm going to get the dimensions for the 180 this weekend and I'll post them here, All I know is that it is 6ft long. I dont know how wide, or how Tall. I know depth isnt a big issue with Aro's but I know length and width are the big factors.

Also, instead of a standard 180, could a 180 WIDE do alright? Im just looking for answers and Im glad to be helped.

Thank you very much!

I am going to be moving in 2-3 years to a largewr house with more room. So I will be able to upgrade then most likely. I was thinking of getting a large fiberglass tank made by AES. They are all blue and have a large viewing window on the front. They have tanks ranging from 163 gallons to 2,000 gallons. They are so cheap!

The 360 gallon tank only costs about 800 dollars! I was thinking of getting the 600 or 300 gallon because They are easily affordable.

So, thats my plan. Keep the black in the 180, then when I move get the AES Tank. Sound good?

I would like to get one of those glasscages.com tanks but the 180 is going upstairs in my room. because I have no space for it downstairs (and my mom will not let me place it there)

So I could either get an AES fiberglass or a Glasscages.

I like the glasscages.com tanks because I can see it from all sides unlike the AES wich only has one large viewing window because the AES tanks are for large fisheries were raising fry and breeding are the main priority and having a display fish is not.

Wait, I changed my plan a bit.

Im going to get the black aro, keep him in the 180 then when I move I'll buy the Glasscages acrylic 240.

Im going to be saving my money as I have the aro in the 180, and by the time i move Im sure I will have enough money for a Glasscages acrylic tank. Then, Im going to sell the 180 on craiglist after I buy the 240.

With the money from the 180 I could even buy another tank and keep something else or just save it.
