I want to find some floating driftwood for my turtle's tank to provide him with a natural looking basking spot. Are there any driftwood varieties that naturally float?
Grapewood (rooty looking stuff from reptile stores) it's about half the cost of normal wood. It will eventually sink so buy two pieces and rotate one out when it waterlogs and replace with the dry one. Just a thought
If you live anywhere close to fallsburg Ky i can get the drift wood and meet you somewhere to give you the wood and I wouldnt charge u for it. In ky and Wv drift wood is very pricey..let me know.
Hey Natalie, How about glueing some suction cups onto the driftwood and stick them to the walls of your aquarium?
I believe some stores sell driftwood with suction cups or you can just DIY.
You could go with a chunk of cork bark. I've had a piece in one of my turtle tanks for a few years and it is still floating just as well as it did on day one. It's very easy for them to climb on as well.
Ooh I think the suction cup idea might be the best method. I have a piece of driftwood right now that looks good and is floating in the turtle tank, but it's slowly taking on water and wanting to sink more and more. I like cork bark ok, but my turtle is pretty small and loves climbing up structures (like driftwood) where he can then stick his head out of water and get a breath.
I'm spoiling him, aren't I? I mean these guys make do in the wild all the time.
Or get a piece of foam (or make a piece with great stuff or whatever) and then try to silicone bark to it, just a thought. Could be nice or a giant mess.
Natalie,
What part of Florida do you live in? Send me a message if you don't want the world to know. I would like to go hunting for some to add to my collection.
Nick I live in Tampa Bay. I haven't collected anything from the wild. The floating piece I have right now was bought at a store and I removed the slate base that it was drilled on to.
