If you're just starting out, focus on your compound lifts. You'll see HUGE gains for the first month or two. Squat, deadlift, power cleans, bench, etc.

What are compound lifts?

I'd say eat more. Drink some protein shakes. You need to gain 20 lbs. If you start lifting as thin as you are, you'll end up just sinewy and more lanky.

That being said....I wish I were tiny. Hah. I've got a 40+ inch chest and have since I was 15. I'll never be thin. I ride my bike over 400 miles a month on average....I'm in very good shape. I just can't be skinny.

i always say start with your diet first. eliminate all the junk food, eat less and do smaller portions throughout the day instead of 3 meals. avoid fatty foods, sugers, and processed fats and carbs.

depending on your base starting point (BMI, % bodyfat, etc...) do a balance of cardio and weights. the more overweight the more cardio.

The best thing (especially when you get more advanced in your routines) is to change things up, never do the same excersises for that muscle the next workout.Even if the variation is something as small as a different hand placement.
Muscles grow due to the before un-seen stress being applied to it.When a muscle matures in development to a certain motion/s, it doesn't need to grow anymore.I.E. confuse the hell out of your muscles.Read more on that.
And for cardio, the best thing is interval training, It makes cardio WAY easier to bear too.

Ok guys, I have to go to work. I just wanted to say thank you so much for all of the advice and support. It really does mean alot to me, you guys are like family.

I will be back in about 8 hours!

You've gotten good advice, something else that no one has mentioned is to start cutting out a lot of the crap foods that comprise most people's diets.

Start by cleaning out your pantry of any foods that have the words fructose, hydrogenated, or enriched.

You'll want to elimate most processed food from your diet and avoid sugar as much as you can. Part of building muscles for aesthetic purposes (as you seem to want to do) is eliminating the layer of fat between them and your skin that usually hides what you work so hard to build up.

Morning cardio before breakfast allows you to burn fat more efficiently because your blood glucose levels are at their most stable point of the day (due to fasting while you sleep).

I'd also suggest that you find an activity outside the gym that you enjoy that works you out too. Mountain biking, climbing, hiking, sports, boxing, etc, because to me, the gym gets to be a pretty lame place after a while. You'll need something to do that helps you use the gains you are making in the gym and those two sides of your workout routine can play off of one another and benefit you more in the end.

go to the gym. :D

i recommend doing a little big of everything, at least 2 times a week and one day of the week overdo yourself.
thats what i used to do before summer i got swoll in 2 months. if your joints start to hurt STOP whatever your doing. i didnt and my elbo clicked for a week or 2.

dont drink vitamin water when you workout, your drinking twice the calories your burn off. i drink powerade zero, tastes great, no calories!

squats really give you a workout.. if done right, but you might feel foolish the first time you do it.

unless you just wanna be fit, go for a run a few times a week

Awesome, sounds good. I am gonna buy some protein powder to make shakes/smoothies with for breakfast and snacks. I figure if I add some strawberries and bananas, I can make them taste good.

Also, as for finding something I like, I ride Dirt Bikes. I can always up the ride time, and ride like every weekend.
