I want to be a real MFK

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
id not recommend getting into a gator gar just yet. they are the "big daddy's" of the gar world, start off with something smaller to get a feel for what gars are like, such as a flordia gar.

what size tank are you working with? jw, giant gouramis need at least 250+ for a pair of them IMO.

i saw a guys tank one time who had no clue what he was doing. it had a 2' arowana in it (6 years old, deformed and stunted horribly), 3 2' giant gouramis in it killing eachother, and a 12" tiger oscar, all in a 150 gallon tank. his water looked more like milk to me because of how nasty and cloudy it was. DO NOT TURN INTO THIS KIND OF MFK PLEASE

(i wish that jerk would get on MFK someday, hed get torn apart by some of the members on here for that one. THEN after the cyber-beating, hed get some help from us lol)

The OP lives in the tropics, hopefully he can just dig a pond.

I will change them into a 75 gallon tank then a bigger. The problem is I cant find any smaller gars, the most common gar is the alligator gar that I see. Do giant gouramis grow fast? What is their growth rate?

an aligator gar is not a fish a starter should keep. Also you need a pond to keep this future 10+ feet monster gar.

75 will last a gator gar a few months at best. It will also probably kill your giant gouramis.

You've been in the gar section long enough to know they don't get that big... but even a 4 foot gator gar is going to be more than most keepers can handle.

They may be able to get that big; largest caught was 8'10." but I have to agree with you: gators are beastly fish are best left to experienced keepers, even when juvenile.

I started Keeping Monsters when i was 13(I have been keeping fish since 6) But I realised that Monster fish have personalities like you can connect with em if ya know what i mean. Im 14 now and have spent literally thousands on My Children :D:D

I know that an alligator gar grows extremely huge and it makes it an unique cool fish. Maybe someday I will if I get enough experience.

Ok. Thx for the advice guys. Are there still any monster fishes that are easy to care for?

My Silver Arowana is pretty easy to care for. They are very hardy fish
