go to a home depot/lowes and buy play sand then sift it in a bucket with water until the water you pour out runs clear.

I would not use play sand. They often contain anti-fungal and anti bacterial agents.

+1

I am using play sand in one of my tanks right now I like the look of it, the only thing I don't like is the cleaning; when people say that it is dirty and you'll be rinsing for a while they are not kidding!

pool sand eh? are there any chemicals in that?? whats the difference between buying pool sand and aquarium sand??

No chemicals just real dusty wash real well and the difference between pool filter sand and aquarium is one you can get for hell a lot cheaper like 25-$30 for 50lbs. and aquarium sand normally is specially colored and is a way to make more money off of fancy colored dirt.

right now i'm using dirt from my back yard and i mixed it with live sand to weigh it down. it look pretty good my GATF seems to like it i have three real strong powerheads and it took two days for everything to settle and now my tank is clear. but dont get dirt and start pouring it in to your tank theres a way to do it. soak it for a few days and rinse out the water as offten as you can, then use a small cup to put te mud into the tank once your done put gravel sand on top. gl

I would worry about hydrogen sulfide gas forming in the mud.
