That sucks! Both times there has been ICH here it came from PETCO...

Since no one else has said it... ALWAYS QUARANTINE ALL NEW FISH! Doesn`t matter who or where they come from. A 10 or 20 gallon QT tank is a lot cheaper than dealing with who knows what:) .... run a small filter on your main tank just so you have a cycled one to go on the QT.

I agree. You really should qt all fish, whether they come from PetCo or a local mom and pop store.

i shopped at petco because im only 16 and i live in new hampshire and i am yet to find a LFS that is local and my parents will not allow me to travel an hour to go get fish. They just dont understand. If anyone knows any good local fish stores in seacoast new hampshire i would gladly shop there over petco. Even if the prices are higher as long as they have a good slection.

(no offence to anyone that works there but i bet your knowlede didn't come from job oreintation, you actually CARE about fish)

This made me laugh because its so true. I've been at petco for 6 yrs now. Petco has taught me nothing, but between me and one other fish hobbiest that works there, we were able to make sure the rest of the staff knew what they were doing. For a while we had an such an awsome staff i was actully proud to say I worked there. But now due to a new horrible store manager, all that staff has left, and of course they arnt bothering to train any of the new staff. I should be quitting next week, and my only misgiving about leaving is how horrible its going to be for the animals and the poor customers that have no clue what they are doing. Actully me and the other fish hobbiest are the only two in the whole store that even own fish now.. and i expect she will be quitting soon also.

1) never judge a store by its name. A petco, petsmart or private owned store is only as good as the employees that work at that specific location.
2) When someone offers to help you at any store, ask if they actully own fish, if they say no, ask for soemone that does
3) Know some basic knowledge, and ask the person that is helping you the questions you already know, if they cant give you proper answers, find someone else.
4) If your starting out, find one employee at one store that you trust, and always speak to the same person, Fish keeping is like rasing kids, everyone has their own idea how it should be done, and you will be competly confused by the differnt answers you will get from different people.
5) Double check everything they tell you with either books or online resources.
6) If you have a local fish club in your area, join that, you can get inexpensive fish and good advice

yeah that is a good point that they are owned and opperated privately i didnt actually know that. all i know though is the petco and petsmart by me are both crap

always have a 10 gal or larger depending on your main tank's size quarentine tank that you would put in a fish that you buy for about a week or so and if everything is fine you move it to the main tank, that's what I do.

I will never buy from petco or any other chain pet store ever again. I recently bought a small common pleco from petco and since then my tank as absoutly crashed. the readings in the tank are still 0/0/0 but 2 angels have died in the last two weeks. The second one to die had clear signs of fin rot. Nothing has changed in the tank excpet the introduction of this pleco and from everything i can tell the pleco brought disease into the tank. If anyone has any idea of anything i can do to save me two remaining angels please tell me.

I have also had similar experiences and have vowed to never buy from chain stores again

Your info says your in says chicago, I've been hanging out with people from the Green Water Aquarist Society latley, their meetings and auctions are held in Chicago/Alsip IL. As far as i know, no one in the club does "monster fish" but if your looking for smaller stuff its a good group. Lots of people breeding live bearers, cory cats, plecos, rainbows, smaller ciclids, angels, discus, ect.

They have annual auctions and the fish go really cheap typically. At the last auction i picked up 5 koi angelfish for $7, and a dozen cherry shrimp for i think $8.

There was a Rhino Pleco over a foot long there that went for $22.

When they have meetings they also have a speaker, the last meeting had a speaker who breeds many species of Rainbow Fish. I think the next meeting is on setting up an auto feeding system for live brine.

Their website is http://gwasoc.org

If your interested the next auction is
April 28th 2007
Rhine VFW Post, 5858 S. Archer Ave in Chicago (across the street from Dominick's, park in Dominicks Lot)
Seller Check in 10:30am - 11:30am
Viewing stops at 11:45am
Auction starts at 12:00pm (usually runs till 6pm at least)

You do not need to be a member to buy fish at the auction

like kimix said not all petcos are that bad come buy fsih from me at petco and see how clean my tanks are and I will not sell fish to people if they do not have a tank big enough to keep it for life... I have quit carrying pacus and several other monster fish I am trying to get the ID sharks off the list now since no one I know of has a tank large enough to handle one in my area... I have had alot of mad customers because they have to go across the street to walmart to buy pacus
