so i come home from work today to find my new baby sev with white specks all over him and im pretty positive its ich. i removed my carbon and treated the tank with clout and raised the temp and i will probably add salt if the problem persists. any other suggestions on what to do? i cant get pictures because the little guy wont sit still enough to get one. he seems to be acting and eating just fine but he has white "dust" looking spots on him so im pretty sure its ich. help if you can with any suggestions. thanks guys.

You've done right and all that you can now....also eating is a good sign and good for his ability to be strong.

ok thanks i hope everything works out ok i hate losing fish =/. should i add aquarium salt and clout or should i wait until the clout is cleared up?

Ich is actually very easy to treat.. Also.. Medications meant to destroy ich rarely work.. Heres what I recommend. Do a big water change(75%) then add carbon and let it run for a few hours to remove the medication(Bump temperature up to 88 Degrees at this time). Then remove the carbon. Add salt, I believe its 1 tablespoon for every 5 gallons. . Out of all my years of fishkeeping, I've only had 2 outbreaks of ich(my fault really, I accidentally turned off the heaters/filters) and when I did the heat/salt treatment, the ich was nuked in 3 days.

Also.. with ich.. You should try to find a reason for why the fish was infected(Why the fish was stressed). Prevention is key. HTH's, Good luck.

thanks would it be ok to leave it for a day just to see what happens? people are asleep in the house so i would wake them up. i wouldnt be able to work on it until 5 tomorrow evening. or would it be ok to add salt to the medication? i already did a huge water change so i didnt know if another would be necessary

I don't know why people over look using Quick Cure. It's a malachite green/formalin mixture. It's green/blue, and its made to treat ich. I have used this on the rare occasion that I get ich, and it's gone in 1-2 days.

I have even used this with scaleless fish, plecos, loaches, and catfish with success.

I have used salt to treat ich as well, but quick cure is something that I keep on hand as well.

Salt is still better than QC.

When you raise the temp (86 will do), make sure to increase oxygen by adding surface agitation by way of a water pump/power head. If you cant afford one, add an airstone or two.

Elaborate?

I've used both salt and QC for ich. With Salt, water changes, and heated it still took 3-4 days to clear a small bought of it. (SA cichlids) When I used QC for my clown loach school, ich was gone almost over night. And the ich was bad on them.. they were from walmart after all.

I find QC to be easier to use as well.

That is absolutely heartbreaking news. I might cry.
