in the last post i had a 2-3 inch flowerhorn in a 29 gallon established tank. it developed ich and caught it to late and wasnt able to save him, how long does the ich disease stay in the tank for? i obviously took out the dead fish but should i take all the water out and put in new? or do i just have to wait it out for the ich to leave the water itself?
 
One big 50% WC & thorough gravel vac. Crank up the heat to 86 degrees. In approx. one month your tank should be ready to go.

nope leave the heat up for 2 weeks more after you know longer see them on your fish.

From what I hear ich stays alive on fish. Not sure how long after the fish dies you have to wait. But if there no other fish it shouldn’t last long. I just changed all water then bleach spray the lightly 1 part bleach 10 part water. Then dry 24 hours and bought Bacteria In a bottle from my lfs. It was like 7.99 you put in everyday for a week then it’s all good. Had new fish in my tank last then two weeks.
 
Heat doesn't kill Ich. It just speeds up the cycle. The cysts are hard to kill, so you want them to burst open as quickly as possible, so the salt kills the motile forms. It will go a little faster at 87-88F, but it still takes time.

sorry ULU but heat will take care of them, salt helps, there life cycle speeds up so much they can no longer sustain them selves and burn out.

Thanks Pops, I've always done both myself. I've never had big problems with ich though. Columnaris was another matter. . . .
