A vent.
The zoo I work is entering busy season, and so my manager/boss Beryl was told to go get a few more fish for some tanks. She was specifically ordered to buy some clownfish for our reef tank, since apparently two parents -complained- to the owner that we had no "Nemo fish, what kind of zoo has no Nemo fish?" She mentioned to me prior to running out that she wasn't looking to buy a lot, if only because the tank is small (125 gallons), and already has a sailfin tang (which I fought tooth and nail to keep OUT of this tank), a lawnmower blenny, and three black mollies.
She returns with the following fish, which she places right in the tank, no QT at all:
3 watchman yellow gobies
4 feather dusters
3 maroon clownfish (1 was removed shortly after, and then placed in another tank after severe ass-kicking from a larger one)
And the ultimate fish: a blue tang. AKA the hippo tang, the palette tang. In short, a Dore fish. And an ICH MAGNET.
When I saw this five inch long tang, I about flipped my lid. TWO tangs which will both get way too large for a stocked reef tank, and my boss simply chimed in that she almost -didn't- buy the fish, but look how active he is, he was even like this at the wholesaler's, bright blue and swimming active and awesome!
The next day, he broke with ich. Severely. And has infected pretty much the tank. Not to mention the sudden ammonia spike from so many new fish at once.
As of now, I have to admit, the only fish I am attached to in this tank is the blenny, lovingly named Little Bastard. If I could get away with getting rid of both tangs, I surely would.
....shall post progression, but obviously my boss wasn't thinking at all when she bought these fish. She marks it down to "I couldn't resist" which is also what she said (that and "They were sooooooooo cheap I couldn't NOT get them!) about the poor two archerfish who she bought and are now, also without QT, in the Fly River Turtle tank. Piggie, as he is aptly named, has already eaten three other archers.
Disillusioned with work? Finally.
