So I just set my my tank for the first time in years. It's just a little ten gallon. I used a filter given to me from a friend of mine who changed tanks, so the filter already had some good biological stuff. I got four neon tetras and resolved to change the water very often since they're somewhat delicate. Well, after just a few days I saw it. Yup, the dreaded white spots of ich. My pet store is very good and agreed to take them back and treat them there, but now I have this tank with ich and I don't want to use chemicals. I've got the heat up to 32°C (90°F). There are no fish in it. How long should I leave it that way before it's safe to try again?

well thats happend to the best of us and for about 3 to 5 day has worked for me

Thanks. I'll just wait about two weeks. I'd rather not have to deal with ich again if I can help it. I feel so bad for the little fishes.
My plan after that is to do a good fishless cycle as instructed here http://www.myfishtank.net/articles/fishless-cycle/
I'd like to set it up as a blackwater tank using peat moss and try again with neons. I really love those, even though they're wimpy. What do you guys think? I'm definitely open for suggestions.

You know, neon tetras are disposable.
They're born to die.

If you want a neon tetra tank, expect to routinely buy more to replace them.
Most fragile fish ever.

The recommended tank size for neon tetras is 15gallons and up, so they might die even more often in a 10 gallon.
Neon tetras need to be in a school of 6+ fish.
4 fish, even faster dying from stress.
Consider another species.

Read up a bit on neon tetras:

You know, I've done a lot of research and have heard mixed reports. I'd like neons, but I hadn't heard the 15 gallon minimum requirement, so maybe I will wait until I have a bigger tank. What about glowlight tetras? Any thoughts on those?
