I have a brown ghost knife (Apteronotus) who's getting worse and worse ich every day. I had treated the tank he's in with Clout (Aquarium Products), which got rid of it for the little blackbelt cichlid (who was the fisrt to show symptoms), but it looks like the knife and a small pleco are just getting worse. Any ideas? I was thinking malachite green might help, I've used that on aros and on a glass knife and it seemed to work well, but I hate to stress him out more with another treatment. Thanks for any advice,
Mike

The knife can't tolerate most meds. I had a young knife arrive with ich all over it. All I did was raise the temp to 85F and add a teaspoon of salt per gallon. The ich cleard up in a week and I kept the temp at 85 for another week to kill any newly germinating spores.

If it did affect, I doubt it would be in the negative; when I had ich, I bumped the temperature in my tank to 85* and added salt. However, my whiptail cats did not enjoy a certain level of salt, so I stopped.

When you increase the temp, do be sure to increase oxygen to the tank as well; use air stones, and lots of them!

Also, something stressful happened in your tank to trigger this outbreak. I'd look into the source as well as the cause to be treated.

One last thing: while I know of few studies that have been done, I've read, researched, and found that garlic seems to help fishie immune systems. You might want to try and add garlic to the diets of your fish (Kent has a Garlic Extract drop that works great for me!).

Most cats don't really apprciate salt, your pl*co probably wont either. But a little salt and heat is the best course of action in my oppinion. I get better results with it then meds I buy at the store.
