Hi all,

I know there’s a sticky thread regarding ich but just want some updated info maybe? That thread is mainly about salt and I’m wondering if that’s what you all use for treatment?

I have been using kordon rapid cure and it’s doing absolutely nothing. So far I’ve lost 1 angel, 8 bleeding heart tetras and quite a few rummynose tetras. :(

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I use ICH-X. It can stain plastic. If you can move fish still alive to a hospital tank that would be best. Let main display be fallow for at least two weeks. Some species of ICH can live longer. Maybe while fish are out turn up the temp to speed up their life cycle.

I kill it with aquarium salt and higher heater temps. Just make sure you have good oxygen in the tank.
Worked for me with a full blown breakout in the tank.

My only thing with the salt is that I have yo-yo loaches and 2 small BN plecos.

I read that salt isn't good for loaches. Otherwise I would say salt and elevated temps.
Might need to go the IchX route.

Depends on the loach. There is an article written by a clown loach owner, already keeps the CL in hard water, that provides details on using salt.

Also got confirmation of salt being used on yo yo loaches
dosing 1 tbs per 5 gallon

Most meds (including salt) work by osmotic pressure, and or just plain toxicity, that osmotic pressure crushes the new emerging ick.
Salt being the least toxic, whereas meds that use copper or other compounds such as malachite green, are also toxic metal compounds (dyes), relying on osmotic pressure. And some are carcinogenic.
Why would you suspect these meds to be any less harmful to loaches than salt?
The thing is.....once ick is in the tank, fish will almost always die if not treated effectively.
The question is, do your treat to save the greatest number, expecting some to die, or treat half assed and they all die? I know, sounds harsh, but this is the reality.
I use 3 lbs of salt for every 100 gallons of water (not aquarium salt, it is BS) just salt (NaCl), if the package say NaCl, it will work, using the weight method. New emerging ick can't take the osmotic pressure of 3ppt or more salinity, most loaches can the it.

Thank you for this.

Any salt can treat ich if it have sodium chloride. Take you're choice table, aquarium, rock and the list goes on. Different people have different preferences. Make sure you do larger water changes and turn up the temps with good oxygen in you're tank.
